A good reminder today from Pete Wilson:
It’s interesting to me how many of the Christian messages, articles, and books (including my own) are full of equations like this…
If you do __________________ God will do _______________________.
There’s something about us that always wants to put God in a box. We want to pretend like we can predict His next move. Now, while the Bible is full of God’s promises we’re often tempted to add to those promises to create a new God. A God who will often meet all the desires of our ego driven, self-centered, materialistic lives.
This sells books, seems to make messages easier to apply, and generally makes a lot of sense.
Until… you pick up the Bible and read from cover to cover about a God who says over and over, in so many different ways, “You can’t predict me. I’m God and you are, well, not.”

Excellent point. It makes me mad when I hear these “prosperity gospel” people saying if you just do God’s will, he will bless you with riches and health, and make all your dreams come true. I mentioned to one person sucked into that movement that it didn’t look like that theory worked for the original disciples. I haven’t heard from her since, sadly. God does promise to be with us through whatever comes our way, but he isn’t a genie in a bottle. As they say in the Narnia books, He’s not a tame lion.
Well said, Susan. Thanks for the Narnia reference.
