Notre Dame Puts Its Foot Down

Interesting stuff here from Rudy’s Alma Mater:

Nearly 65,000 people have signed an online petition protesting President Obama’s scheduled May 17 commencement address at the University of Notre Dame, saying the president’s views on abortion and stem cell research “directly contradict” Roman Catholic teachings.

“It is an outrage and a scandal that ‘Our Lady’s University,’ one of the premier Catholic universities in the United States, would bestow such an honor on President Obama given his clear support for policies and laws that directly contradict fundamental Catholic teachings on life and marriage,” the petition at notredamescandal.com reads.

None of today’s “outraged” protesters had much to say when pro-choice, pro-death penalty, pro-war, pro-torture Condoleezza Rice spoke at Notre Dame’s commencement. At least President Obama agrees with the Catholic Church on most of these issues.

This is an interesting comment – thanks for leaving it.

Respectfully, and not that I’m a huge fan of Condoleeza, but it does seem like kind of a step out to say that she’s pro-war and pro-torture. Is anyone really pro-war or pro-torture?

Concerning Obama, on the other hand, you can categorically and definitely say that he’s pro-abortion.

If your point is that the church should take more of a moral stance on a variety of issues, I would agree. The church raises the flag on abortion, and that’s not the only area they should be raising the flag on. We should be raising it on civil rights, poverty, and many other issues.

Nevertheless, abortion is, and should be, a make or break issue I believe.

Another comparison is when G.W. Bush gave a commencement speech at Calvin College, my Ala Mater. There were petitions and protests. It is interesting that some of the same groups who praised the protesters at Calvin are condemning those who are collecting signatures at Notre Dame.
