Rick Warren's Reformation

An interesting quote from Rick Warren, complete with some rhyming:

I’m looking for a second reformation. The first reformation of the church 500 years ago was about beliefs. This one is going to be about behavior. The first one was about creeds. This one is going to be about deeds. It is not going to be about what does the church believe, but about what is the church doing

I’m very grateful for Rick Warrens’ call to the church to live out the implications of the Gospel– that is, to do good works. I’m not sure that we need a second reformation here in America though, because the evangelical church often seems to be in danger of losing its grip on the truths of the first reformation!

Many professing Christians in America can’t explain justification by faith alone or have never even heard of the doctrine. There is all too often a functional works-righteousness in quite a few of our lives, I fear, including mine. We *never* stop needing to the Gospel truth of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

We do need more and better teaching on the *implications* of belief in the Gospel for one’s everyday life as a part of the larger people of God. The implications are radically counter-cultural. However, the “deeds” should never be taught outside of the *context* of the “creeds.”

needing to *hear* the Gospel truth, that is… it’s too late (or early) for me to be typing!
